World Resources Institute (WRI) is developing a predictive model that estimates reservoir water availability at least 1-3 months in advance using hydrometeorological parameters and reservoir water level data. This prototype, called Reservoir Watch, will help shift the discourse around energy security and power generation to integrate water risks in planning and decision-making for the energy sector.
Reservoir Watch will be developed using deep-learning technology; paired with historical and near real-time data. It will improve predictive modelling to map future water availability and energy production. This work builds on previous research developed in partnership by WRI India’s Water and Energy teams. Through this work, we aim to highlight the value of transitioning to renewable energy, shifting to water prudent power production, increasing water-use efficiency and improving water management in thermal power plants.
